From Thailand to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)

The mysterious, powerful and majestic Mekong is the Southeast Asia's longest river of 4,200 km. It is one of the last major rivers to retain a near-pristine condition. Awesome in its topography, fascinating in its cultural fabric, and diversity in its demography, the Mekong continues to inspire a sense of wonder.

With its snow-fed headwaters lying higher up in China's Qinghai Province, near the Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong crosses Yunnan Province, an area of mountains and fertile valleys inhabited by colorful tribal communities, forms the border between Myanmar and Laos before flowing into the Golden Triangle. After forming most of the border between Thailand and Laos, the Mekong crashes over the spectacular Khone Falls, then passes into Cambodia where it enters a broad floodplain to flow by Phnom Penh, the main stream forks into two broad arms, the Mekong Proper and the Bassac, and then enters Vietnam, forming a classic delta of nine streams that fan out and drain into the South China Sea.

Tracing the Mekong to Thailand’s Neighboring CountriesDiverse in its topography, the Mekong also plays a major role in determining histories and cultures of the lands it borders, as well as the lifestyles of the richly mixed populations it has sustained. To travel the Mekong countries feel like a journey through time, as well as to discover the timelessness of nature's ever-varied grandeur.
