Thailand offers a fascinating and unique experience to its visitors. It has many natural attractions, national parks, waterfalls, wildlife, magnificent rainforests, and beautiful beaches. Aware of the impact that tourism has on the environment, Thailand is promoting the importance of long-term tourism management, and promoting eco-adventure travel. Eco-tourism involves responsible activities in natural areas that conserve the environment and quality of life of the local people. Climate, coral reefs, caves, fishing, beaches, and tropical forests, combined with the rich culture of the country, make Thailand an ideal destination for developing eco-tourism.
Many communities are now welcome tourists at the same time as maintaining their sustainable agricultural practices and conserving their environment. One type of eco-tourism is adventure tourism. It was backpackers from Western countries, who first showed interest in this type of activity. From small informal groups venturing into the mountainous North in the early 1970s, trekking has developed rapidly over the past decade and has become the brand for eco-tourism. Almost every hotel in the northern cities of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son offers trekking and hill-tribe tours which are popular with both local and foreign travelers. Around the central provinces, eco-adventure excursions combine physical activities like trekking and rafting with cultural sightseeing to temples and historical sites.
To make contact with the land, a boat trip along rural waterways can take travelers to see orchards, rice paddies, salt fields, mangrove forests and villages with a heritage crafts. This region is a hub of agriculture, agro-tourism to show visitors the enormous influence of agriculture on the Thai way of life, which is increasingly gathering interest from "green" travelers and tour providers.
