The language the I-San people use is I-San dialect, which is very similar to that of Laos. The identity of people in this region is determined through the authenticity in the tones and the choice of words they use. Each word has a straight forward meaning that is easy to understand and shows the sincerity of the speaker.
The Culture
Kind hearted and fun loving nature of the people, distinguishing dialect, and the simple way of life full of traditions and local customs are the qualities that makes the culture of the Northern region unique. Ancient cultural practices and local wisdom have been passed down through generations. I-San culture is the mixture of Thai, Lao and Khmer influences, which show in the Northeast’s arts, architectures and lifestyle.

In historic times, the northeast was part of the great Khmer empire ruled by Angkor. It contains some of the finest classical Khmer ruins to be seen outside of Cambodia. The strongest cultural influences from Laos are clearly evident from the food they eat, the language they speak, the architectures and designs of Buddhist temples to the arts such as music and dance.
