The beauty of the natural surroundings, the fascinating cultural interest, together with the gentle characteristic of the people, made up the magical vibes of the North of Thailand. The northern region is full of remote forests, the breathtaking scenery of the mountain ranges, and the spectacular waterfalls. It is the origin of important rivers such as Ping, Wang, Yom and Nan which together converge into Chao Phraya River. The North falls into two distinct areas, the plains of the lower north from Nakhon Sawan to Sukhothai, and the mountainous upper north leading to borders of Myanmar and Laos.
Northern people are famous for their courtesy and hospitality. The noted variety of cultural traditions invites tourists to many festivals each year such as the annual Songkran Festival in Chiang Mai and Loi Krathong in Sukhothai. The North is also the home of many ethnic hill people and is a center of authentic handicraft and village artisan works.
The Climate
Surrounded by mountains and elevated high above the ground in the valley, the climate of the North is cooler than other regions of Thailand. This region enjoys three seasons: summer from March to May, rainy from June to November, and winter from December to February. Staying up in a high mountain, particularly at night can be extremely cold with the temperature occasionally drop below freezing point. The most pleasurable time to visit is from November to mid-February.
