Serving 25 years as the capital city of Ayutthaya Kingdom, Phitsanulok has a rich historical background worth studying. Visitors to Phisanulok is advised not to miss visiting Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat that houses Thailand’s most beautiful statues of Buddha , Phra Buddha Chinnarat.
Located on the temple grounds is The Buddha Chinnarat National museum where visitors can discover the Thai culture and arts from the Sukhothai period.
Another noteworthy place to visit is the Folklore Museum that has an impressive collection of local arts and crafts and local life through the centuries. Apart from having interesting history and culture Phitsanulok is an important cultural center of Thailand. Phitsanulok also has many unusual locations of natural beauty. Visitors would be mesmerized by many species of flowers at Thung Salan Luang National Park, which is also where Kaeng Sopha Falls or the Niagara of Thailand is located.
Phrae
Phrae is one of the oldest cities of Thailand and was once a Burmese outpost. The charm of this city lies in its beautiful architectures and cultural heritage. Its most famous temple is Wat Phrathat Cho Hae, seated on a small hill east of town with a tall chedi wrapped in thin gold sheet. Eco-tourism is available at Phae Muang Phi, which has a collection of strange soil pillars created by erosion. Visitors can enjoy rafting and hiking particularly around the Kaeng Sua Ten rapids in Mae Yom National Park.
