Traveling to the North is convenient and comfortable due to the availability of all modes of transport – plane, train, bus, or car. Traveling around the region is accessible by bus and minibus that can be found in every province of the North. Renting a car to explore the region on your own is also an option.
By Air
The Northern region is equipped with facilities that offer a pleasant time to its visitors. The international airports in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai allow travelers to fly directly to the North while domestic fights are available from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airport in Bangkok. There are several Airlines like Thai Airways International, Nok Air, Air Asia, One Two Go, and Bangkok Airways operate daily flights to different provinces.
By Road
Those who would like to travel to the North by road can take highway no.1 (Phahonyothin Road) to Km.52 then take Asian Highway (Highway No. 32) from Bangkok with convenient road signs in Thai and English .There are also extensive network of public transport and overnight coaches that run daily to all provinces on the North, with the major key areas in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phitsanulok. Tickets can be purchased from travel agencies or directly at the Bangkok Bus Terminal.
By Rail
Trains that go to the North run daily from Hualamphong Railway Station in Bangkok, stopping at Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Lanphun, and end in Chiang Mai. Both fanned and air-conditioned seats are available to suit everyone’s preference and convenience. For air-conditioned overnight ride, the seat can be transformed into bunk bed. Food and drink are available in the cafeteria section. Tickets can be purchased at the Hualumphong Station.
Getting around the North
Getting around the North is easy and convenient with bus and minibus which runs frequently to towns and villages around the North. Cars, 4WD, and pick-up trucks are easily found for rent in the major provincial destination, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son. For more adventurous travelers, bicycle and motorcycle are also popular means of transport to explore the town or get out of town and see the idyllic countryside
