Thailand is a paradise for food lovers. All time favorite hot and sour prawn soup or Tom Yum Kung, the famous creamy coconut milk soup called Tom Kha Kai or the world renowned green curry, are all originated from the Central part of Thailand. Unlike the North and Northeast, where glutinous rice is popular, Central Thais like the fragrant plain variety, most commonly steamed but sometimes fried or boiled.
A typical meal of the Central Plains often involves around three to five dishes which normally includes snacks like fishcakes, a spicy salad known as Yum, a stir-fried dish and a curry dish, eaten with the famous Hom Mali jasmine rice. There types of curries based on coconut milk are; a green curry or Kaeng Khieo Wan, usually made with fish or poultry; a hot curry or Kaeng Phet, and a milder version called Kaeng Phanaeng. Another popular dish is called Haw Mok, which is a banana leaf cup of mousse made of red curry paste, egg and coconut milk with seafood.
Central Thailand has the advantage of many rivers flowing southwards over flat terrain to create a fertile soil in which almost any crop can flourish. People of the Central region enjoy the food that comprises of a wide range of fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits, as well as fresh-water fish and seafood from the Gulf.
