LOCATION MAP

Historic Hotel 1999: The Hotel Beau-Rivage in Ouchy on the lakeside of
Lausanne was constructed in the middle of the last century on the initiative
of a private company. After two years of construction, Lausanne opened its
first grand hotel on 24 March 1861.
The hotel façade was built in what was a new architectural style for
hotels at that time, using palaces and castles as a model. The extension,
the palace of 1908, looks like an imposing, six-storey castle with a curb
roof in neo-baroque style. The transformation in architectural language from
the mid-19th-century style that looks back to the Italian renaissance to the
liveliness of the neo-baroque form around the turn of the century is rarely
better seen and admired than in this hotel where the two feature side by
side.
To date, thanks to several phases of renovation, the Beau-Rivage has always
managed to keep up with the latest developments in both technology and hotel
business requirements. Architects and owners have gone to astonishing
lengths to preserve the historical evolution of the structure and draw
attention to the essence of the building. An understanding for the original
building that has never been seriously questioned, its recent rescue and the
hotel's own esteem for its grandiose past that flows through its almost
140-year history like a leitmotif are the main reasons that moved the jury
to award it a prize
