
Mauritian Creole or MC is the national language of Mauritius and thus spoken by the majority of the population. Though English is the official language of Parliament but only 3% of inhabitants of Mauritius used this language in their daily conversation. French is recognized as the native language of Franco-Mauritian and mostly used by the mass media. Overall the entire populace of Mauritius knows and practices MC for communication purposes. The majority of MC words are of French source and others from Malagasy and Chinese.
Though the language of Mauritius is mainly based on French but wealthy with the vocabulary and syntax from the African and Asian languages. Mauritius, the tiny island is better known as “melting pot” with a wide array of languages. Mauritius being the home of several immigrants and slaves who were brought to the island from Asia. Ethnically 685,170 or 69% of the residents are from India. Thus Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Arabic, Cantonese and Mandarin are some highly spoken languages of Mauritius.
