About Greece
|
Greece an irregular-shaped peninsula is located at the southern part of Europe. 80% of this peninsula is covered by mountains or hills, thus recognized as one of the most mountainous countries of Europe. Western Greece contains lakes and wetlands. Having the maximum elevation of 2,636 m, Pindus is the central mountain. The Pindus can be measured as a continuation of the Dinaric Alps. Corfu, Cephalonia, and Leucas or the Ionian islands is situated at the west of the mainland whereas Euboea, Samos, Chios, Lesbos, and Crete commonly known as Aegean islands, are positioned at the east of Greece. Greece, Epirus is located at its north central part and Macedonia sited at the western zone.
It carries a long history regarding the geography of ancient Greece and how it developed. Remote societies or poleir developed their own systems. The water was only there with much of hilly land. The Persians were to their east and Rome festooned to their west. Now Greece comprises of a huge mainland at the southern conclusion of the Balkans.
